In order to answer this question, I need you to join me in asking yourself who am I? Do you know about yourself or do you know yourself? And it’s ok if you don’t know the answer, I still ask myself this question often. The reason I’m starting with this question is because we often get lost in the perception of the image we have created of ourselves and forget about the essence of who we are. Knowing who God is works the same way. I must be honest, I’ve experienced times in my life when I’m uncertain and forget who God has been in my life. We get carried away by hearing about God and forget to actually take the time to learn who He is. Today I want to share three attributes that characterize God. Although this list could be eternal, these three are the ones I go to the most:
1) God is Holy
“Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His footstool—He is holy.” (Psalms 99:5)
The word “holy” in the Bible means “set-apart”, “sacred”, “worthy of veneration” and it is the only attribute that is used to describe God three times. God is “holy, holy, holy”. This passionate expression of truth is only used two times in the Bible. God’s nature transcends our own existence and most importantly, it does not change. God is today who He was yesterday, and who He will be tomorrow. Although this is the main attribute that we cannot comprehend, it is refreshing to know that He is perfect and can make no faults. As we gaze in awe at His perfection, remember to know that He is above all things.
2) God is Wise
“To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.” (Job 12:13)
The word “wisdom” in the Bible is defined as the ability to judge correctly and to make the best decision, based on understanding and knowledge. God is wise, and He knows everything. Let that sink in for a little, He knows everything. He knows what you did yesterday, and He knows what you will do tomorrow. And the most humbling aspect of God’s wisdom is that it’s there for us to seek it, learn it and keep it. Take this moment to know that He wants to share that wisdom with you. Ask for it and you will never regret doing so.
3) God is Faithful
“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” (Deuteronomy 20:4)
The word “Faithful” means steady, unchanging and loyal. It means that even though we all go through constant challenges, God remains steady, unchanging and loyal to us. The most critical aspect of this relationship includes God’s forgiveness of our transgressions and the ability to give us the victory in the end. If you are going through a difficult time, know that He goes with you at all times, and that His relationship with you remains faithful through and through.
