I first came across this idea living in Colombia. I used to spend my vacations thinking about how my life would be in the future, what I would be doing, and where I would be living. Although I have developed the meaning ever since, to me it started as “being aware of my surroundings.” To me it meant enjoying the presence of those around me and grasping the hidden queues that were floating in the interactions occurring in front of me. I learned that there is a time for everything and sometimes being mindful of this can help us make the most out of every opportunity.
Today I want to share two reminders I constantly use to be mindful:
1) Be Present
When was the last time you drifted off into the pondering of existence? I often do this myself and it is easy to fall for the easy trap of daydreaming. I’ve learned there are mainly two types of distraction and I want you to let me know if you’ve experienced any of them.
The first one is “Responsibilities Due”, when you are at an event, or gathering, and suddenly you start thinking about the responsibilities you have, the project that is due next week, the report that you couldn’t turn in, or even the meeting you haven’t prepared for. Sound familiar?
The second one is “Abounding Possibilities”, when you’re sharing a moment with your loved ones walking around or just spending time doing what you consider a relaxing activity and start thinking about what you will be doing in five years or where you will be living.
Although some of these thoughts are important, it is very critical to set a time for these activities and fully immerse in the current activity you are in. I usually stop myself when I start drifting off and actively remind myself to take part in the moment. Learn to catch yourself doing this and actively try to be engaged where you are so that the people around you can experience your presence.
2) Reflect Often
Taking time to reflect can help you grow and become a better person. Remember when I said it was “critical to set a time for these activities”? I meant it, it’s extremely important and we constantly need to keep this mind.
I learned to reflect when I was growing up. I used to take the slow days with my cousins to lay down, look up and talk about our feelings. We took this time to learn what we wanted to achieve, what our views of the world could be, and how to learn from our emotions.
I currently use running to reflect on my life. I found that this time allows me to think back on what I’ve done and study my future possibilities. Allow yourself to reflect and help yourself by engaging fully in something you enjoy doing. Set a time and an activity to reflect. It doesn’t have to be complex or expensive, it just needs to help you explore your mind.
I constantly remind myself to be mindful, to enjoy the moment and to look back as an inspiration to move forward. Keep these two reminders close to you and enjoy the places you go to, the people you meet, and the events you take a part of. Are you ready to be more mindful?
